She's a Vocaloid, which is a Japanese voice synthesiser package - in other words, a piece of software that you can use to produce vocal tracks you can stick into your music, complete with your own (Japanese) lyrics. The human voice made into an instrument, basically. Yamaha had the idea of creating a female mascot to go with the voice, so the character Hatsune Miku was born.
